While the western part of Cologne was captured by Allied forces in March of 1945, some of the eastern part of the city, including the Cathedral, was still under control by the Wehrmacht as well as a 500m strip of the Rhine. By 16 April 1945, the rest of the city as well as the Rhine was captured by the Allies. (via)
